Shout-out - Atopic Dermatitis Group forming in Israel

Hey you, yes, you.
If you feel it's time to stop reading about atopic and start doing something about it...
If you're sick (in more than one sense) of feeling alone with your disease and you want to meet others with the same problem...
If you're a parent of a child that suffers from atopic dermatitis and you think there should be more being done...

... now's your big chance.

We are now in the preliminary stages of forming a group for atopic dermatitis. With the help of "Etza" (=literally "Advice"), the Israeli organization for Self and Mutual Help, two other atopic patients and I are forming the initial core of this group. We will be meeting, hopefully before Passover, to set our initial goals and priorities for this group.

You are very welcome to join us, whether you are an atopic patient yourself, or the parent of one. If you want to join us and influence the direction of this group, now's the time. (You can always join later, but now is better! :-)

Send me a mail: shiri.dori AT gmail.com
We would love to have you with us.

Hi shirki,
This is a great blog! are you familiar with "The multicenter PARSIFAL study in 2006, involving 6630 children age 5 to 13 in 5 European countries, suggested that restrictive use of antibiotics and antipyretics, are associated with a reduced risk of allergic disease in children". this is from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atopy

kisses, Donsuh

Thanks Donush, I wasn't aware of this study, although I checked it out, and it actually refers to usage of antobiotics during the first year of life. So I guess it's too late for me ;-)

What an odd topic to blog about! I've had very mild eczema since I was a kid but last year my entire body decided to explode with flare-ups.

It got REALLY bad. Half my body turned purple, I bled, suffered from lesions and I had to get corticosteroid shots in the bum for two weeks. I was prescribed betaderm and it disappeared within 2 days.

Something disturbing has developed however. Before I never used any moisturizers or anything but I was fine, after I had treated the flare-ups. I've started to flare up all over my body again and this time I thought I was prepared...

I attacked from multiple fronts. I wore and slept on cotton only fabric (This had reduced my previous flare-ups significantly)but this time? It didn't work. I increased my betaderm usage to 2 times a day for two weeks, but this time? It didn't work. I started using the heaviest cream (aquaphor) to hydrate my skin. It didn't work. I even started to use detergent that was made specifically for eczema sufferers and I stopped using fabric softner all together. It didn't work...

So now I'm at a loss. I still have a few aces up my sleeve but I just don't know anymore. I'm going to stop showering and using soap. Instead I'm going to bathe daily and use an oil emollient (e45). I'm going to buy a HEPA air filter. I'm going to sign up for this program (based on cognitive psychology) that has been clinically proven to reduce stress. I'm a little worried however. In a month or so I'll be moving to one of the coldest and driest places to live. If I can't manage the eczema HERE, then I don't know what I'll do.

Thanks Chandra, and anonymous, for your response.
To anonymous, I'm glad you're taking actions to ensure that your health is the best. But are you seeing an expert dermatologist? It sounds to me like things have gotten south pretty quickly. What might work for mild atopic is not enough to budge serious flare-ups. Have you tried corticosteroid creams, rather than a shot? Are you taking antihistamines at all? There are also more serious treatments like UV and immuno-suppressants. Only a doctor who's an expert in the field can recommend the best treatment. Bath, soap and clothes solutions can only take you so far. Best of luck and health!
